Some Pirate Notes
- Solomon Torres is back and is apparently happy to be with the team. Torres is the type of guy that the Pirates should be trying as hard as possible to showcase, along with Damaso Marte and Shawn Chacon, over the next two weeks.
- The John Wasdin Experiment has officially ended, as the
batting practicerelief pitcher was designated for assignment yesterday. Too bad. I won’t be able to buy outfield seats expecting to catch home run balls anymore. - Wasdin was designated so that the team could recall Mt. Lebanon grad Don Kelly, who hit .218 at Indianapolis. That’s not an impressive stat, even for a player who you are going to leave on your bench. Do the Pirates honestly think that Kelly has shown more than someone like Yurendell de Caster? De Caster can play anywhere on the field and hits for speed and average. Outside of the publicity stunt mentality of Kelly, de Caster is a much better potential player.
- The Pirates have three of the same player at AAA, with catchers Einar Diaz, Humberto Cota, and Carlos Maldonado.
- I want to see more of Josh Phelps.
- The Pirates haven’t won five consecutive series since 1992. Coincidence? I think not.
