He’s Baaaaaccccccckkkk
Mad Michel Therrien received a contract extension through the 2008-09 season. The extension is a fantastic move on the part of Ray Shero, as Therrien and his staff essentially raised the formerly Baby Penguins during their stint at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The extension is not too long, however, that if Therrien does not get the job done (and that simply means making the playoffs and not bowing out too early), he can be replaced.

As for right now, I think that Therrien is the coach for this team. His attitude will work as long as it is supported by locker-room leaders like Crosby, Mark Recchi, and Gary Roberts support it, which they do at this point. Therrien is a legitimately hard coach to play for, which is why he failed in Montreal, but the situation here with these players being brought into the league by their minor league coach, in many instances, makes for a potentially special cohesion.
These are the tiny moves that turn good teams into championship teams.
