When I had been dead set against Jamie Dixon becoming Ben Howland’s replacement. The reason being: I thought Pitt had a better option in Wake Forest Coach Skip Prosser. Prosser, a native Pittsburgher, died today at the relatively young age of 56.

Most of the time, when a celebrity or sports figure dies, I automatically say “that’s awful,” but I don’t really feel anything when I say it. This time, it’s truly a terrible loss, as it stemmed from sudden and unforseen complications, and it’s even worse considering Prosser’s reputation of being one of the best human beings in college basketball.

It’s strange to think that if my wish came true, Pitt would be looking for a new coach tomorrow.

  • I stumbled across your website recently, and have been reading it semi-regularly for the past few weeks. I do wish it was stricly Pirates-related, as I can get my general news from the sports world at many other sites. I am a lifelong Pirates fan, 36 years old, and live in Charlotte, NC. I have read Bucco Blog for a couple of years and this is better than Jake’s blog. Since I am from Tobacco Road, I do have one clarification for you. Pitt didn’t have the “option” of hiring Skip Prosser. They did indeed offer him the head coaching job, but as tough as it was to turn down the job in his hometown, it was his decision to stay at Wake Forest and sign a long-term extension. Thanks again for your thoughts on the Pirates, and keep it up. By the way, where are we on the trade front? Are we going to get anything of value when we unload Marte, Torres, Chacon, Castillo (hopefully), etc?
