Some Pirates Notes
Sorry for the trickle of posts . . . it will be slow and sporadic for the next week or so, as I have to read five books (Crime and Punishment, Pride and Prejudice, Secret Life of Bees, Silent Spring, and A River Runs Through It) in preparation for school, which starts August 27. Check back often as there will be days like yesterday, where there’s nothing, and days like the day before where there are three or four little things. On to baseball:
- The Pirates own Aaron Heilman. As of yesterday, the Pirates have either beaten or embarrassed the young righty four times in his career.
- Dave Littlefield is really panicking, as several other places have noted. Calling up Andrew McCutchen, Neil Walker, and Dave Davidson (one of the worst names ever) to Indianapolis makes virtually no sense at all. Walker and McCutchen are not on the 40 man roster, so they will probably not be seen in September. It seems like Littlefield is just trying to make it look like his minor league system is making progress so that he can somehow save his job.
- Jack Wilson’s clearing waivers means that a) no other team in baseball outside of Detroit is interested enough in the shortstop to put in a claim and b) that he can be traded to any team in baseball until August 31. The fact that Jair Jurrjens is on the 40 man roster for Detroit, however, indicates that a trade may not occur until the off-season.
- It is beginning to look like Dave Littlefield is being pushed out of the door by the Pirates, as the Post-Gazette today began the speculation that the GM and manager situation will be sorted out by the new CEO, whoever that is.
