A Few Notes
Just looked at today’s Post-Gazette (between readings of Pride and Prejudice) and learned that Pedro Powell is on pace to become the second player to lead the Carolina league in stolen bases in back-to-back years (he has 61 so far this year and had 63 last year). This is not a good thing, as a player with an obvious talent, like Powell, must have serious deficiencies elsewhere if he has not been moved through the system at this point.
Sure enough, Powell is like Chris Duffy but faster and generally worse. His batting average has somehow regressed this year, dropping to .250 from .263 last year (okay, it’s really not that big of a deal). He has also managed to avoid hitting a home run for two consecutive seasons, which is just pathetic. This is not a player that should be showing up on any radar screens. He should be turned into an organizational soldier or another team’s problem.
In other notes, Jim Tracy called Carlos Moldanado “offensively challenged.” In other words, he sucks.
In further proof that Pittsburghers love fireworks, the series with the Phillies sold the fifth-highest number of tickets of any series in PNC history (106,501).
