He’s Gone
Dave Littlefield has finally been fired, a move that Pirate fans have been waiting for since about year three of his regime. The first two questions (besides who his replacement will be) being asked by Pittsburgh media figures is why the GM was allowed to take on massive amounts of payroll in the form of Matt Morris and Cesar Izturis at the trade deadline and why Littlefield wasn’t fired before.
The answer to the first one is probably that the Nuttings desperately want to give the impression that they are trying to put a winning team on the field, and many fans equate this to payroll, something that Morris and Izturis bring to the table.
Littlefield probably wasn’t fired earlier simply because the Nuttings wanted to make sure that his team would fail as is. Unfortunately, that meant the drafting of Daniel Moskos and the waste of a very high first round draft pick.
The Nuttings finally seem to be instilling some accountability in the organization, but it may prove to be too little too late for the Pirates’ breaking baseball’s consecutive losing seasons record.
More to come tomorrow evening.
