Taking His Time
Neal Huntington is taking is time in deciding on the next manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The story says that Huntington has spent time basically putting the organization in order and figuring out just how bad the situation that he inherited is.
He is working on basically rebuilding a whole system from the ground up and is busy worrying about hiring an assistant general manager and various other people to crucial positions instead of hiring an on-field manager.
Huntington states that “the playoffs are still a factor [in the managerial hire],” meaning that he is still more interested in Joel Skinner than he is in anybody else. This theory makes sense because none of the other remaining teams (Skinner is the Indians’ 3B coach) have legitimate managerial candidates as coaches. He claims to have a list of 10 names, likely including Trent Jewett (just because he will interview someone “in house”), Buck Showalter, Skinner, and probably Ken Macha.
I am still willing to bet that they hire Skinner.
