If The Pats and the Steelers Sense Smoke, There May Be Fire

After yesterday’s game between the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts, Patriots’ President Jonathan Kraft approached the NFL about the Colts pumping noise into the RCA Dome.  Kraft cited a “skip” in the noise that was heard in the RCA Dome, something that the NFL and the Colts allege is CBS’ fault.

The Steelers accused the Colts of similar crimes during the 2005 Super Bowl season, with Head Coach Bill Cowher mentioning the noise as a major detriment to his teams’ ability to play the Colts in Week 12 of that season.  The NFL should seriously consider combing over the RCA Dome with a fine-tooth comb, as there tends to be fire where there is smoke particularly if two of the NFL’s premier organizations are making the accusations.

I would not be surprised if, when this occurred, the NFL discovered something that enhanced the noise.  That stadium goes from way too loud when the other team has the ball to way too silent when the Colts have the ball.  It is almost as if the Colts have programmed their fans to follow their directions, which would make some sense, but not as much as a noise enhancer.

When organizations make accusations like that, they are generally not light.  Sure, the Patriots’ accusation may have been gamesmanship and the Steelers’ accusation may have simply been a ploy to gain some type of advantage in the weeks leading up to the AFC Championship Game.  The fact of the matter, however, is that two organizations, one with fans known to be amongst the most rabid in the game, wondered just how the Colts manage to make their stadium as loud as they did.  The NFL has already learned that the Patriots may have been giving themselves a competitive advantage during their recent run of success.

Would it really be that implausible to think that the Colts may have been doing the same?
