When the Penguins brought the “Experience the Evolution” campaign to life immediately after the lockout, they were focused on a collection of young potential stars who had the potential to become a great team. The majority of hockey followers thought that one of these players would become the best player in the world. Fortunately, they were thinking about Sidney Crosby, who has been consistently outshined this season by the sun-bright light of Evgeni Malkin, who is allowing fans to see the maturation process of the likely best player in the world. Neal Huntington executed a trade with his old organization, the Cleveland Indians, on Thursday, picking up reserve OF Jason Michaels for a player to be named later. Michaels, who is 32-years old, bats from the right side of the plate. His acquisition allows the organization to send Nyjer Morgan, who has only received three starts this season, to AAA Indianapolis. Keep reading →

John Russell hadn’t done very much to this point in his tenure as Pirate manager, but on Tuesday night he made lineup changes that were critical to the Pirates’ 12-6 victory, even though ex-Pirate Jose Castillo attempted to ruin Zach Duke’s best start in a very long time. The Steelers’ draft last weekend disappointed many fans who wanted the team to draft for need and take offensive and defensive linemen on the first day, thereby filling holes in on both sides of the ball. Instead, Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin took the best player available both times the Steelers’ name came up and, in doing so, created what could be one of the best offenses in the NFL next season. Immediately after Ray Shero made the blockbuster trade for Marian Hossa (and Pascal Dupuis), commentators everywhere said that giving up Colby Armstrong, Eric Christiansen, a number one pick this year and top prospect Angelo Esposito would only be worth it if Hossa helped the Penguins win a Stanley Cup Championship. On Sunday, Hossa went a long way towards doing that, scoring two goals and providing the difference in a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers, propelling the Penguins into the Eastern Conference Finals. Two of the Pirates’ main problems came back to haunt them again on Saturday as Paul Maholm gave up seven runs in five innings and Adam LaRoche left six runners on base en route to a 9-8 loss to the Washington Nationals yesterday as the Pirates lost a series to one of the few teams that may actually be worse than they are.
