Mclean Youth Basketball Rules
The game of basketball is governed by a set of rules, which are designed to promote safety and fair play. While the rules may vary slightly from league to league, or even from court to court, the basic principles remain the same. Here are a few of the most important rules that every young basketball player should know.
The first rule of basketball is that the ball must be bounced off the ground when it is being passed between players. This ensures that the ball does not become lodged in between two players, potentially causing an injury. If the ball does become lodged, play will be stopped and the ball will be given to the team who did not touch it last.
Another important rule is that no player may touch the ball with their feet while they are on the court. This includes while they are dribbling or shooting. Doing so will result in a foul being called against them.
There are also restrictions on how players can move around on the court. For example, players cannot run with the ball in their hands; they must dribble it instead. Additionally, players can only take a maximum of three steps without bouncing the ball off the ground first. These steps are known as ufffdwalkingufffd and taking more than three steps without dribbling is considered traveling (which results in a turnover).
Players can score points by shooting the ball through their opponentsufffd basket (known as a field goal), or by making free throws (shots taken from behind an imaginary line located at each end ofthe court). Free throws are awarded after certain fouls have been committed or if a player successfully makes a shot from beyondthe three-point line (a distance away fromthe basket which varies depending on league regulations).
