The world’s highest-paid footballers
The world’s highest-paid footballers are largely concentrated in Europe, with some of the game’s biggest stars plying their trade in England, Spain and Germany.
According to Forbes’ annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, the top 10 footballers earned a combined $US112 million ($144 million) in the 12 months up to June 2017.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the clear leader, earning $US93 million ($122 million) over the period, with Lionel Messi coming in second on $US80 million ($105 million).
Ronaldo’s earnings are largely thanks to his endorsement deals, with the Portuguese star raking in $US32 million ($42 million) from sponsors such as Nike, Tag Heuer and Herbalife. He also has a lucrative contract with Real Madrid, which pays him $US50 million ($66 million) per year.
Messi’s earnings are more skewed towards his salary and bonuses from Barcelona, which amount to $US53 million ($70 million). He does have some major endorsement deals – including with Adidas, Pepsi and Samsung – but they only bring in an additional $US27 million ($35 million).
The world’s highest-paid cricketers
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at the wicket with the bat, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this and dismiss each player (so they are “out”). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or by hitting a wicket with the ball before a batsman has scored. When ten players have been dismissed, the innings ends and the teams swap roles. The game is adjudicated by two umpires, aided by a third umpire and match referee in international matches. They communicate with two off-field scorers who record all runs scored, wickets taken and overs bowled.
The world’s highest-paid cricketers earn an average of more than $10 million per year according to Forbes magazine. Indian batsman Virat Kohli tops the list with earnings of $28 million in 2018, followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni ($27 million) and Rohit Sharma ($20 million). Australian players David Warner ($17 million) and Steve Smith ($10 million) round out the top five.
